April Flower Fool

Posted: April 1, 2012 in Inkspots

Everyone is talking about Fools today (well, it is April the 1st) but these flowers are no trick, just a nice treat. I have no idea what this little guy is, or  to what genus he belongs, but he and his friends exploded out of the side lawn today!
Hullo. Resistance is futile, your lawn will be assimilated. They’re such bright explosions of purple and violet!  Their heart is nearly blue it’s so purple. I’d like to shrink down to the size of an ant and just sun myself on one of those lovely petals.

They aren’t the only ones making me wander around the neighborhood, defying all sense of self-preservation, as I snap their images up.  I’m all ready sniffling and snuffling but I was deprived of flowers all winter and now my eyes are gulping down the colors and shapes like a dying man in the desert inhales water from an oasis. I can’t get enough. There’s the weeping cherry tree across the street that calls to me, its blossoms flirting with the gentle April breeze.

And if that wasn’t enough, the cherry tree behind my house is just about ready to explode with its own blossoms!  Oh, so much loveliness, and I can’t help but glut on it.  There’s such a wonderful promise in the cherry tree, Dad and I wait all year for the opening of the flowers and the amazing rain of delicate pink petals.

They’re here for such a short time, and  I am determined to feast and enjoy every single blossom that I find.  Allergies are not going to rob me of the Spring glory. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to check my tissue supply and see what kind of  tea I can make to soothe my scratchy throat.   Here’s one last picture from this flower fool. Feel free to link me to your own blossom finds!

  1. Those are violets 🙂 I love springtime because the lawns all turn purple and violets are my favorite flower. I was always so annoyed when they cut the grass at UU and the little strawberries, violets, and dandelions were killed. White, purple, and yellow on green . . . Behind the playhouse at our old house was a bed of violets almost a foot high, just a thick tangle of those spade-shaped, curved leaves, and they exploded in color. Now I never see beds like that anywhere, just isolated flowers scattered all over a field. My guess is those are dog violets (? http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/ce/Viola_riviniana_and_canina.jpg) and what we used to have were wood violets http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/14/Viola_cucullata.jpg). I miss violets :\

    • THANK YOU! They are gorgeous little things, and just about everywhere. I was saying “Dad, you CANT MOW them they’re FLOWERS” and he looked at me like I was nuts. I’m thinking of a rescue mission.

  2. I spend all my time waiting for the redbuds to bloom but they’re only out for like a week and a half -.-
